How to Chose Which Acrylic Paint to Purchase – Learning to Paint

Beginning hobby painters have a lot of decisions to make concerning what to purchase.  When it comes to acrylic paint, it can be confusing to know what type to buy.  Acrylic paint is like anything else on the market.  You get what you pay for.

If your not yet real serious and still trying toying with the idea of taking up painting as a hobby, you probably will go out and purchase some discount acrylic paint in the department store’s craft section.  This is how I started.

If you are looking for advise, and you are expecting quality paint with vivid pigment, do yourself a favor and buy quality product from the start.  This doesn’t mean the most expensive, it just means don’t buy the cheapest.  You are more likely to be pleased with your work, if the colors are vivid.

The other thing to know when choosing acrylic paint, it the consistency or thickness to buy.  Some acrylic artist chose heavy-bodied paint because they like the oil painting consistency.  Other artist, including myself like medium bodied consistency paint.  The reason that I like medium bodied paint is because I can apply it in layers if I choose.  I can use a little water and thin it to a water color consistency as well.

My basic color set consists of about 5 or 6 colors.  I always have a good amount of white gesso.  I use the gesso for most all of my white needs.  The other colors I use in almost every painting are hookers green, burnt and raw sienna, dioxine purple, and phathlo or ultramarine blue.  Of course I use other colors such as crimson, orange and yellow.

Build your paint inventory over time.  There may be colors that are appealing on the shelf, but not on the canvas. Have fun and enjoy painting.
